2008 Happenings
There are some great things happening this year:
1) The big Majuro/Hawaii trip is finally happening. Flying out April 6th. I'll keep you posted
2) Dive Heart will be making their annual trip to Cozumel May 7 - 11th.
3) The Dive Pirates will be making their annual trip to Cayman Brac June 7 - 14th.
4) Here in Arizona a few of us are working with an HSA certified instructor in Roatan to go there June 14 - 20th.
5) The Handicapped Scuba Association (HSA) will be making their annual trip to Bon Aire August 9 - 16.
Lastly, we cannot fail to mention Stay-Focused. They will be making several trips to Grand Cayman again this year. In the past four years they have made twelve trips! All participants were fully funded. This is a real achievement that has helped hundreds of mobility impaired athletes, mainly college students, to discover and advance their scuba abilities.
Whatever your desire or ability level, be sure to explore all your options.
Sincerely
-Pete

The Majuro/Hawaii trip went well. I was coughing too much to breath through a regulator when I was in Majuro, but I did meet the dive operator and tour the facilities. I think I will definitely be back to dive there one day soon.
Luckily I was able to make a couple dives by the time I was back in Oahu and Aaron's Dive shop came through for me again. This time they took me to see the Corsair and I was very happy with it. Lots of fun exploring such a famous Hawaiian wreck.
The Cozumel trip also was fun. Not only is it one of the top reef diving locations in the world but the style of diving is challenging- drift diving is what I consider a fairly advanced type of diving compared to what I'm used to. For a handi-diver who is used to having a scooter to complete these dives WITHOUT said scooter speaks volumes about what I experienced.
There are many facets to drift diving that handi-divers notice which able-bodied divers simply never see. Our dive operator was always gracious but there was some learning going on with regards to safety specific to the needs of handi-divers. Would I do it again? Certainly! Would I recommend it to other Handi-Divers? With advisement and specific council regarding concerns, yes; I would cautiously recommend this style of diving to Handi-Divers.
With proper preparation, communication and planning, the Cozumel drift dives would have been safer. Contact me for specifics if you are interested.
The Cozumel trip was also my first time with this group- DiveHeart. They are certainly a great group of divers whom I recommend without hesitation.
Next? The second annual trip to Cayman Brac with Dive Pirates. These people are perhaps the fastest growing, most dynamic group of handi-divers on the planet. Their energy is positive, their style safe and relaxed, their achievements are heartening. Be certain to meet and dive with this group and you will always remember the positive energy they bring.
Sincerely
-pete
